Many times we will connect to our wireless router using an analog phone gateway or Analog Telephone Network (ATN). However, we will connect to our modem using an Ethernet port from the modem to configure Internet access. The analog phone network was set up to enable us to make calls using a regular telephone handset and Internet connection. This was a wonderful idea, as long as you did not get charged for long distance calls. Unfortunately, there is a problem with connecting the two: we have the IP address of the modem instead of the IP address of the computer that is using the ATN.

We can use different methods to resolve this problem. For our internet access we can use a FON or USB Ethernet card that connects directly to our modem or a wireless router. With the FON the Ethernet signal will go out to the modem and from there it will go to the wireless router or ATN. This is a great method as it is very fast and it works while the computer is turned on. We can also use the USB Ethernet card if we are away from the house, but the ATN does have its advantages.
If we connect the ATN with the FON we have a challenge on the login page. Every time we login the system thinks we are trying to access a traditional analog phone that is registered with the company. In actuality we are trying to log in to the Ethernet IP address of the modem and the wireless router or ATN device type. If the login page is not correctly set up on the ATN device type we will see a message on the screen that says cannot connect: unknown device type.
What is a FONA?
To fix this problem we need to be able to configure the Ethernet port on the computer so that the Ethernet signal will work with any of the IP networks or traditional phones. In the case of the FONA we have a very simple configuration that is fairly easy to do and that will allow us to login normally to our network. We just need to power up the device either by plugging it into a power outlet or by turning it on. We can then go to Network setup and select the connection setup tab. This will give us an option for a dial-up modem. If we click the OK button the FONA will be configured and we can proceed with our normal login.
There are several reasons why we might want to use a FONA instead of a more common device such as a modem. The primary reason for this is portability. With an Ethernet card we can move around the office without any problems. We can also set up multiple devices if needed, but with a FONA we just select a single username and password and then log in normally. It is a very simple way to gain access to the network.
Another benefit is that we don't have to type in our passwords every time we want to login. When we use a FONA we will have a graphical user interface and we can switch between our various logged-in users at any time. This is particularly useful when we have multiple employees working on the same computer or when we want to use different user names within the same system. If you have ever had your computer's login name blocked or changed without your knowledge it can cause serious problems, as you will have no option but to enter in your password every time.
If you find that you have forgotten your username and password it can be quite impossible to log back into your system. Even if you remember the password it may not be possible to type it in on the login page. Even if you have changed your password on other computers you will not be able to see what has been changed if you have reset your login on your work computer.
The other main advantage is that you don't have to have a printer or scanner connected. If you do not wish to print out the log you can save it to a file and then send it to an offsite printer so that you can print it out from your own computer. It should take no more than a few seconds.
