When you offer bedding plants to customers, make sure you can
speak knowledgeably to them about what plants will work best in
your area’s climate.
Some customers will want plants that will last for several
seasons. Others will want annuals, which they’ll need to
replace, and plant hardiness won’t be a concern for them.
To serve customers in the first category, you’ll want to be
familiar with your area’s temperature zone, which can be found
in this National Arbor Day Foundation hardiness zone map. It’s
an updated version of the U.S. Department of Agriculture “Plant
Hardiness Zone Map,” which was last published in 1990 and
therefore doesn’t reflect the rising temperatures that many
areas of the country have experienced.
Your bedding plant vendors should be able to provide you with
hardiness ratings for the plants they supply you. Be familiar
with the ratings, and consider putting them on signage for your
customers. The more knowledge you give them, the more successful
they will be with their plants, and that will keep them coming
back for more.
