WHAT’S IN A NAME The genus name “Brassica“ is
the classical Latin word for cabbage. The species
name “oleracea” means vegetablelike, and the
subspecies “acephala” means without a head.
FAMILY MATTERS Brassica is a member of the
Cruciferae/Brassicaceae (mustard) family. Close
relatives include Matthiola (stock), Iberis (can-
