According to early data from the Society of American Florists (SAF)’s instant sales survey following Thanksgiving, about half of retail florist shop owners reported that their sales for the holiday were greater to or comparable to their Thanksgiving sales in 2011.
Forty-four percent of floral retailers reported that Black Friday sales were down, and 45 percent said they were unchanged. Only 6 percent said sales had increased or didn’t know at the time of the survey.
Slightly more than one-third of florists reported online sales were unchanged, and about one-fourth reported declines. However, another one-third didn’t know their results or said the question was not applicable to their businesses.
Small Business Saturday
Initial results show that about half of floral retailers promoted the event and half didn’t. Most florists said they did not run any specials for the day and that few customers mentioned the promotional event. Six out of 10 floral retailers believed the small-business promotion did not result in more sales than would have occurred without the promotion.
